Summer Is Moving Right Along

Can it be??  It’s already mid-August?  Summer is flying around here.  Got the fall snow peas sown during the first week of August.  I’ve been sowing beets, carrots, napa, and collards by my early August deadline.  Before you know it, the tunnels will be up, it’ll be getting chilly,  and I’ll be thinking wistfully of beautiful tomatoes, warm from the sun.

Speaking of summer flying…The Mother Earth News Fair is coming up next month.  Already??!!  Yup, time sure does fly!   I’m looking forward to speaking at the fair.   Check it out at:

What a week!

After getting back from the rodeo in Detroit, things really backed up on the farm!  Thank goodness we got some rain in my short absence.  Market day on Saturday July 30th was great.  Weather was clear too.  So great to see everyone again!  Here’s a shot of the stand on July 30th Ligonier Country Market before selling began.  And, a shot of myself  at home laughing, thinking about how much fun I had at the rodeo.  Can’t wait til the next one!

Wonderful news!  I will be presenting at the Mother Earth News Fair at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania.  The fair runs September 24-25, 2011.  Looking forward to it!

Shallots and Heat!

My, it’s been hot.  With the exception of that glorious rain we had last Friday, it’s been dry and toasty.  The rain came at a good time because I started losing some of the vegetables.  The late sweet corn and pie pumpkins finally started sprouting with that rain.

On a good note, the hot, dry days have been great for curing the multitude of shallots.  Spent a good portion of the day yesterday cleaning and grading the shallots.

A Great Market Day

The July 2nd Ligonier Country Market was great!  Lots of folks turned out and the weather couldn’t be better.  I’m so grateful for my customers!  All during the rest of the holiday weekend, I was busy caring for all the veggies that should be ready for my next market day on July 16th.  Hope to see you there!

Waiting patiently for peeps

This Blue Slate turkey hen has been setting on a clutch for a little over 2 weeks now.  Poor thing.  She’s got so many eggs to set on that they’re popping out from underneath!  Hopefully, soon we’ll have new life here on the farm!  We have our fingers (and wings) crossed!

Shallot season has arrived!

Late June and early July is a busy time of year here on the farm.  The garlic has been brought in and is just about finished curing.  The shallots, on the other hand, are ready to be dug.  There are approximately 4,000 shallots to dig and dry/cure.  Here’s a photo of just some of the shallots drying in the warm sunshine.

Fortiter is a latin word meaning, “Bravely”.  Fortiter Farm is a micro farm in the Ligonier Valley of Pennsylvania.  This blog is a way to share the day-to-day activities and life on the farm.  A way to be connected with your farmer and your food!

I sell produce at the Ligonier Country Market in Ligonier, Pennsylvania approximately every other Saturday during the 2011 Market Season.  Tomorrow, 2 July 2011 is my next market day.
